What is NUS AIS?

Inspired by student AI Safety initiatives like

• MIT AI Alignment (MAIA)
• Havard’s AI Safety Student Team (AISST)
• Stanford’s AI Alignment student initiative (SAIA)

NUS AI Safety is a university student initiative, seeking to cultivate a community of AI Safety technical and governance student researchers who care about:

• Mitigating the risks — in particular, reducing the likelihood of catastrophic risks — from rapidly more powerful AI systems
• Fostering dynamics which enable for vast societal benefits to emerge from increasingly more powerful AI systems, distributed in as just ways as viable

AY24/25, Sem 2: Our Delivered Impacts

Last semester, we successfully launched our inaugural fellowships in AI Safety Governance and Technical AI Safety, selecting about ten students for each stream who passed our criteria. We also managed to secure funding to support our semester-long operations from the Singapore AI Safety Institute (SG AISI), which is itself a node amongst a growing network of AISIs emerging across the globe as nations become increasingly aware of the imperative need for international cooperation regarding AI Safety.
